St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury

Founded in 598 AD by Augustine, the St Augustine's Abbey marks the rebirth of Christianity in southern England.

Founded in 598 AD by Augustine, the St Augustine's Abbey marks the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. It was originally a burial place for the Anglo-Saxon kings of Kent, and then used as a monastery by Augustine and fellow monks who came to Canterbury to convert the Anglo-Saxons at the behest of the Pope. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its influential position during the Middle Ages. Rebuilt in the Norman era and almost completely destroyed at the Dissolution of the Monasteries, the ruins of the abbey are not substantial. The museum on the site explores the history of the Abbey and offers visitors a VR (virtual reality) tour of the complex as it was in the 16th century.
