Wrights Hill Fortress is a circular coastal artillery battery in the Karori suburb of Wellington that was built during and after World War II in 1942-'47 to protect the city from bombardment. Predominantly underground, it has numerous subterranean tunnels linking the war shelters, gun emplacements, magazines, plotting rooms and engine room. The 2 guns which were installed here were never used for military purpose, and were fired just once for testing purposes before being sold as scrap. Used for recording echo effects for the Mines of Moria scene in The Fellowship of the Ring, the tunnels are open to public on Waitangi Day, ANZAC Day, the Queen's birthday, and Labour Day. Tours may be booked at other times by prior arrangement.
