Step back in time to rediscover the romance of Wellington's iconic cable cars in the Cable Car Museum, which is located in the original winding house for the cable car system. It houses the original winding mechanism of steam-operated wheels and levers which was operational from 1902 until 1978 on the ground floor. The upper gallery displays 2 of the original grip cars that operated on the line from the city centre up to Kelburn, including the Grip Car 3 and a typical 'Red Rattler', so named for its noisy journey uphill. Visitors can also try out costumes from the early 20th century and have their photographs taken with the antique cars. The theatre screens 3 short films on New Zealand’s trams, and private and public cable cars around Wellington. There are also photos and information panels that cover some of the cable car system’s history. Admission to the Cable Car Museum is free.
