The public plaza has a statue of a Lone Sailor by sculptor Stanley Bleifield, standing on the 'Granite Sea' - a large world map with an azimuthal projection centered on Washington DC. It stands as a tribute to those who served in the U.S. Navy. Surrounding the Granite Sea are 26 bronze bas-reliefs that represent a variety of significant events, persons, and communities associated with the U.S. Navy. The 2 fountain pools adjacent to the Granite Sea honor navies around the world. There is also a wall engraved with remarkable quotes from the history of the US Navy.

The Naval Heritage Center on the Plaza showcases rotating exhibits on the history and heritage of the Navy. It screens several movies daily, including the Discovery Channel's 'At Sea' and 'A Day in the Life of the Blue Angels'.
