Corso Umberto is the arterial street in Taormina, a 1 km long pedestrian stretch from Porta Messina through Porta Catania, connecting several major attractions in the city. Named after king Umberto I of Savoy, it was part of the ancient Via Valeria, which was the extension of the Via Tiburtina connecting Messina to Catania. It is the main commercial street, lined with boutiques, artisan stores, gelaterias, restaurants and cafés in charming old building of varying styles – Gothic, Baroque, Arab and Norman. The major squares on Corso Umberto are the Piazza Duomo in front of the Cathedral, and the Piazza IX Aprile which is usually crowded with tourists. Along the way are the City Hall, San Giuseppe, Taormina Arte, Palazzo Corvaia, Santa Caterina Church, Church of Saint Augustine, and Castello.
