Yellow Fortress, Sarajevo

Žuta tabija or Yellow Fortress is a cannon fortress on Jekovac Cliff in Sarajevo, built in the 18th century by Ottoman-era Bosnian Governor Gazi Ahmed Pasha Rustempašić Skopljak to fortify Vratnik.

Žuta tabija or Yellow Fortress is a cannon fortress on Jekovac Cliff in Sarajevo, built in the 18th century by Ottoman-era Bosnian Governor Gazi Ahmed Pasha Rustempašić Skopljak to fortify Vratnik. It was renovated by the Austro-Hungarian administration in 1883 and 1903. Named for the yellow stone used in its construction, it has an irregular octagonal shape, with the northern side measuring 27.5 metres in length and the other sides measuring 10 metres. The bastion today is a popular vantage point that offers gorgeous views over the city, especially the old Bascarsija area and Miljaca River valley. It is worth the uphill hike for the sunset views. Though it is not a functional fort, the cannon is fired at sunset during Ramadan to indicate the time for breaking the fast.
