The Franziskanerkirche or Franciscan Church is one of the oldest churches in Salzburg, dating back to the 8th century during the time of Saint Virgil. It has been renovated several times, and the old Renaissance choir was replaced with Hans von Burghausen's Gothic choir in 1408-'50. The Gothic Tower was also added in the 15th century, and houses one of the oldest preserved bells made by the master bell-founder Jörg Gloppischer.
Though the interiors were redone in the 18th century by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, the new high altar in red marble and gold still retains Michael Pacher's Late Gothic statue of Madonna with Child from the 15th century. 4 chapels of the church are from the 17th century.
