Alter Markt is the Old Marketplace in Salzburg's historic centre that has been around since the 13th century. At the centre is the marble St. Florian's Fountain, dedicated in 1734 to the patron saint of firefighters. It is surrounded by medieval and 16th – 17th century houses, including the smallest house in Altstadt which stands next to Café Tomaselli and measures only 1.42 metres across. Also of note is the 16th century Hofapotheke, an old archiepiscopal apothecary with gorgeous black and gold interiors.
