Union Buildings, Pretoria

Overlooking the city from the top of Meintjieskop which is the highest point in Pretoria, the Union Buildings are the official seat of the South African government.

Overlooking the city from the top of Meintjieskop which is the highest point in Pretoria, the Union Buildings are the official seat of the South African government. The complex also houses the offices of the president of South Africa. Designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the English monumental style buildings in light sandstone are an architectural marvel. Laid out in a semi-circle, the 2 wings of the 275 metre long structure represent the union of English and Afrikaans, with the court between the two symbolizing the Union of South Africa. The terraced gardens around the buildings have indigenous plants, and the 9000-seat Nelson Mandela Amphitheatre. While the buildings are off-limits, the gardens are open to public. Explore the lush greens to see the various monuments and statues dotting the grounds, including the 9 metre tall bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, and an equestrian statue of General Louis Botha.
