Paul Kruger House, Pretoria

The historical residence of the President of the South African Republic Paul Kruger and his wife Gezina is now open to visitors as a house museum.

The historical residence of the President of the South African Republic Paul Kruger and his wife Gezina is now open to visitors as a house museum. Paul Kruger is remembered for his struggle against the British during the Second Boer War (1899 - 1902), and this museum pays homage to his life. Kruger House was built in 1884 by architect Tom Claridge and builder Charles Clark as a single-storey white cement house that was one of the first in the city to be electrified. The entrance to the Victorian home is guarded by 2 stone lions which were gifted to Kruger by mining magnate Barney Barnato. The interiors have been refurbished to reflect the original ambience as it was during Kruger’s time with period furniture and décor. The other two buildings in the complex have exhibits on the various periods and events in Kruger's life, including his exile in Europe and the knife that he used to amputate his own thumb after a shooting accident. Visitors can also see the old private railway car that he used on the campaign trail and for official visits.

Admission is R45 for adult South African nationals, and R65 for international tourists. There are discounts for students and senior citizens.
