The Machairas Monastery in the valley of the Machairas Mountains is a 12th century monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its highlight is the miraculous icon of Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Machairas which is believed to be one of the 70 icons that were painted by the Apostle Luke. Destroyed twice by fire over the centuries, the Byzantine monastery was rebuilt in 1905. The interiors are decorated with religious icons, chandeliers, and wall frescoes.
