A central point for the geodetic mapping surveys of the 1800s, the Centre of New Zealand on Botanical Hill is a very popular walk in Nelson. You can start from the Botanical Reserve where the first ever rugby game was played, or from the Nelson Visitor Information Centre and follow the Maitai Valley Walkway to the Hardy Street Footbridge. At the top is a monument and a needle installed by the Nelson Jaycees in 1969 marking the zero point, and a commemorative plaque. Though the gravitational centre of New Zealand is actually in Spooners Range, the Centre of New Zealand is still a reference point.
