La Panier, Marseille

Le Panier, which translates to 'The Basket', is the oldest part of Marseille as the site of historical settlement of the Greek colony of Massalia in 600 BC.

Le Panier, which translates to 'The Basket', is the oldest part of Marseille as the site of historical settlement of the Greek colony of Massalia in 600 BC. Once a melting pot of cultures with immigrants from South America, Africa, and south-east Asia, the city was spread over the Butte Saint-Laurent, Butte des Moulins, and Butte des Carmes. It flourished within the old ramparts till the 17th century, when Louis XIV ordered an extension. Destroyed by the Nazis during World War II, the derelict area has been renovated and urbanized over the decades as part of the Euromediterranée project.

Explore the maze of narrow alleys and hidden squares lined with old and new buildings, mills, galleries, artists' studios, and cafes. Highlights of the Panier area are ✓Église Notre-Dame-des-Accoules, ✓Place de Lenche which was the ancient Greek agora and Roman forum, ✓Eglise Saint-Laurent, ✓Accoules which houses a museum for children, ✓the former hospice of Hôtel-Dieu, ✓windmills of Place des Moulins, ✓Hôtel de Cabre, ✓the 16th century Maison Diamantée with a diamond-patterned façade, ✓the pink Daviel Pavillon of the Town Hall, ✓Musée de la Boule, and ✓the Centre de la Vieille Charité which houses a cultural centre, museums, and galleries of African, Oceanian and Amerindian art and Mediterranean archaeology.
