The Corniche du Président-John-Fitzgerald-Kennedy, better known as La Corniche, is a 5 kilometre stretch along the Mediterranean coast from the Plage des Catalans in the north to the Plages du Prado in the south. One of the most beautiful avenues in the city, the Corniche is lined with fishermen's huts in the Vallon des Auffes, 19th century villas, beach-view hotels, restaurants, bars, and beaches. At 174 Corniche is the Marégraphe set up by the French General Leveling Committee in 1884 to define the zero reference altitude which is marked on a granite plate with an alloy of platinum and iridium. Other highlights are La porte de L'orient - Monument aux Armées d'Afrique, Calton Beach, Parc Borely, Socièté Nautique Corniche yacht club, Parc Valmer, Anse de l'Oriol, Jardin Benedetti, Plage du Prophete, Fausse Monnaie, Château Berger, Villa Valmer and Villa de Gaby Deslys.
