Château d'If, Marseille

Situated on a tiny island 1.5 kilometres off the coast in the Bay of Marseille, the Chateau d'If is famous as the prison in which Edmond Dantes was confined for 14 years in Alexandre Dumas' novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo'.

Situated on a tiny island 1.5 kilometres off the coast in the Bay of Marseille, the Chateau d'If is famous as the prison in which Edmond Dantes was confined for 14 years in Alexandre Dumas' novel 'The Count of Monte Cristo'. The fortified complex was built in 1524-'31 by King Francis I as a defensive stronghold for protecting the coast, and served as a prison from 1580 to 1871. Once home to political prisoners and Huguenots, it is today open to visitors. The 3-storey building has 3 towers with large gun embrasures, and offers great views of Vieux Port. Boats starting from the Quai de la Fraternité also take visitors to the Frioul Islands of Ratonneau, Tiboulen, and Pomegues.
