It is one of the largest and most impressive art museums in France, with a well curated collection of paintings from Antiquity to the 20thcentury. Highlights of the collection are Donatello’s Feast of Herod, Anthony van Dyke’s Miracle of Saint Anthony of Padua at Toulouse and Portrait of Marie de Médicis, reine de France, Dirk Bout’s Ascension of the Elect, Hemessen's Vanite, Rubens’ Descent from the Cross, Jan van den Hoecke’s The Liberality of the King, Pieter Boel’s Allegory of Worldly Vanities, Renoir's Jeune femme au chapeau noir, Goya's Les Jeunes, Delacroix’s Medea, Duval’s The Birth of Venus, Veronese’s Sketch for Paradise, Manet’s Portrait of Berthe Morisot with a Fan, Seurat’s Landscape at Grandcamp, and Picasso’s Olga au col de Fourrure. There are several works by renowned Lille artists Francois and son Louis Watteau including Une fête au Colisée.
