Vieille Bourse is the Old Stock Exchange of Lille, built in Flemish Renaissance style in 1652-’53 to designs by Julien Destrée. The building comprises a cluster of 24 identical ornately adorned houses around an arcaded quadrangle with booksellers, florists, and chess players. Operational as a stock exchange till 1921, its campanile is crowned by a statue of Mercury, the god of trade. The Flanders Lions emblems can be found on portals, while the pilasters in bright orange panels are adorned with caryatids and Atlases, and the pediments of windows on the second floor have garlands, fruits and other commercial markings.
