The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum presents the work of the international humanitarian organization which was founded in 1863 in Geneva by Henry Dunant and Gustave Moynier to protect human life and health, and prevent and alleviate suffering. Its permanent exhibition 'The Humanitarian Adventure' explores 3 contemporary challenges in different areas designed by architects from all over the world –

  • Defending Human Dignity by Gringo Cardia from Brazil explores the fragility of the human condition and violations that take place around the world.
  • Reconstructing Family Links by Diébédo Francis Kéré from Burkina Faso presents the human angle of crisis situations where loved ones may go missing. It takes visitors through a dark space with cold chains where they can experience the iciness of loss, and then to an installation surrounded by natural materials which emphasize the connection between nature and family.
  • Reducing Natural Risks by Shigeru Ban from Japan presents a space created by recycled cardboard tubes which are used for building temporary shelters after natural disasters. It presents the role of communities in preventing calamities and epidemics.
