Palace of Nations, Geneva

The Palace of Nations in Ariana Park is the seat of the United Nations Office at Geneva, the European headquarters of the UN.

The Palace of Nations in Ariana Park is the seat of the United Nations Office at Geneva, the European headquarters of the UN. Built in 1929-'37, it was the seat of the League of Nations until 1946, and subsequently the UN Office. It also houses offices of various UN agencies, such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), and United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). Some areas of the complex are open to public, and guided tours are the only way to explore the building.

The neoclassical building was designed by Carlo Broggi, Julien Flegenheimer, Camille Lefèvre, Henri Paul Nénot, and Joseph Vago featuring a central unit with a colonnaded façade, flanked by 2 horseshoe-shaped wings. A time capsule under the foundation stone contains a list of all the League of Nations member states, a copy of the Covenant of the League, and specimen coins from all the member countries at the League's 10th Assembly. The reinforced concrete structure is clad in white stone from the Rhône valley and Italian travertine. The Art Deco interiors have over 2000 works of art, including gold and sepia frescoes by Catalan painter José Maria Sert in the Council Chamber, glass engravings by Anatole Kasskoff in the French Room, and stained glass windows by Alexandre Cingria in the lobby.

The surrounding Ariana Park has three 19th century villas - La Fenêtre, Le Bocage and La Pelousealso, along with several installations including the Woodrow Wilson Memorial (Celestial Sphere) and Re-Birth sculpture by Michelangelo Pistoletto. Peacocks can be found roaming around in the area. The Place des Nations square in front of the complex has the iconic Broken Chair sculpture.
