Inaugurated in 1984 over the site of a former quarry, the Umgeni River Bird Park is home to over 800 birds across 220 different species from around the world, including 17 threatened species.
Inaugurated in 1984 over the site of a former quarry, the Umgeni River Bird Park is home to over 800 birds across 220 different species from around the world, including 17 threatened species. Located on the banks of the Umgeni River, the lush avian sanctuary spread over 3.5 hectares has several waterfalls, stunning rock faces, and tranquil greenery. Its highlight is the Free Flight Bird Show which features birds from North and South America, Africa, Indonesia, and Australia, including cranes, hornbills, macaws, kookaburras, owls, toucans, and vultures. These birds can be viewed in unrestrained free flight in an open-air auditorium which replicates the wild. Shows run at 11 AM and 2 PM from Tuesday to Sunday. The nursery has a viewing window which allows visitors to observe how birds are hatched and raised.
