KwaMuhle Museum, Durban

Kwa Muhle is one of four historical museums in Durban which together present a comprehensive overview of South African history, the others being the Old Court House Museum, Old House Museum, and the Port Natal Maritime Museum. Once the headquarters of the infamous Native Administration Department which controlled the influx of non-white immigrants into the city during the apartheid era, the KwaMuhle Museum today showcases life in Durban during those dark days. The Durban System exhibit explores the discriminatory practices of the time, including municipal monopoly on the production of Zulu sorghum beer. The Mkhumbane Gallery displays photographs relating to the forced removal of people from Mkhumbane, and the development of townships like KwaMashu and Umlazi. Learn about the urban development of the city and the many hazards faced by its residents due to apartheid policies. Admission is free.
