Built in 1871-'74 as the residence of entrepreneur and politician William Larnach, the Larnach Castle is a stately building on the ridge of the Otago Peninsula in Dunedin. The Gothic Revival mansion, restored and maintained by the Barker family, is surrounded by 7 acres of manicured greens which include a Patterned Garden, Lost Rock Garden, Serpentine Walk, Rain Forest, South Seas Garden, Alice Lawn, and Laburnum Arch and Green Room. It features a Wishing Well, Dungeon, a Methane Gas Generation Plant and an Oamaru Stone Cheshire Cat. The mansion itself is elegantly decorated with luxury period furniture and antiques. Visitors can also stay overnight at Larnach lodge in the castle grounds, and dine in the castle itself.
