The Royal Albatross Centre at the foot of Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula is home to the world's only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony.

The Royal Albatross Centre at the foot of Taiaroa Head on Otago Peninsula is home to the world's only mainland Royal Albatross breeding colony. The centre features a Poutokomanawa carved pole which tells the story of the Maori people. Guided tours to the observatory on the nature reserve offer an introduction to the sea birds by Sir David Attenborough, and close up views of giant albatross at various stages of their breeding cycles. Visitors can also see the historic Fort Taiaroa and the Little Blue Penguin colony at Pilots Beach.
