Excavations indicate the site has been fortified since the early Byzantine period during 5th – 7th century AD, though the present day castle is believed to have been built during the reign of Manuel I Komnenos or Michael I Komnenos Doukas in the 12th – 13th century. Due to its advantageous location giving clear views over the sea and city, it has been of strategic importance for defending the region. Walk around to explore the medieval acropolis complex, and see the Church of Archangel Michael, circular water tower, rock chapel of St Kyriaki, anthropomorphic sarcophagi, and ruins of a garrison.
