St Spyridon Church is a 16th century church dedicated to the eponymous patron saint of Corfu and 'Keeper of the City', who is believed to have saved the island from plague and Ottoman invasion. The Venetian style church was built to house the relics of St Spyridon, which were kept in a former church on San Rocco Square that was demolished for building fortifications. The layout is simple, with a single nave. The ceiling murals depict events and miracles from the life of the saint. Next to the imposing marble iconostasis lies the double sarcophagus with the mortal remains of St Spyridon. The bell tower with its bright red dome is the tallest of its kind in the Ionian Islands, and stands out in the skyline.
