10 kilometres to the west of Cordoba's historical centre lie the ruins of Medina Azahara, once a powerful, fortified Arab Muslim medieval palace-city that was the capital of Al-Andalus. Built by Abd-ar-Rahman III al-Nasir, Umayyad Caliph of Córdoba, in the 10thcentury, it was abandoned in 1010 after being wrecked by Berber soldiers in a siege. The complex is under excavation, but visitors can see the dug-out ruins which include 2 caliphal residences, aristocratic residences, baths, some administrative buildings, the court complex with a reception hall, mosque and garden areas.
