The Puerta de Almodovar is a monumental gate which was built in the 14thcentury as part of the medieval defensive wall that protected the historical centre of Cordoba. It stands at the entrance of the old Jewish Quarter, with a rectangular passage beneath the high-vaulted arch and a crenellated roof. There is a garden outside the Puerta de Almodovar, with a statue of the famous Cordoba philosopher Seneca on a pedestal. Calle Cairuan runs along the wall and has a statue of another renowned Cordoba philosopher, Averroes.
