Once a Benedictine Abbey of the Maniaces, the Castello di Nelson complex was gifted by King Ferdinand IV to the English admiral Horatio Nelson in 1799.
Once a Benedictine Abbey of the Maniaces, the Castello di Nelson complex was gifted by King Ferdinand IV to the English admiral Horatio Nelson in 1799. The abbey and 2 small towers which were part of its defensive system lie in ruins, but Nelson's English style country house and gardens with lava stone sculptures are well maintained. Also of note are the portal and Byzantine icon of the Church of Santa Maria here. The rooms of the apartment house a museum dedicated to Nelson and the royal family, displaying their belongings and personal effects such as portraits, royal letters, chests and miscellania. The English cemetery near the castle has the graves of members of the Nelson family and castle administrators.
