Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on the Atlantic coast in Cape Town is the highlight of South Africa's oldest working harbour.

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront on the Atlantic coast in Cape Town is the highlight of South Africa's oldest working harbour. Designed by Adrian van der Vyver, the 123-hectare complex has a shopping mall, marina, and various options for shopping, dining and entertainment. Explore the vibrant area to see its various attractions -

  • The giant Cape Wheel is an iconic observation wheel with transparent enclosed cabins that go up to a height of 40 metres, offering great views of the harbor, Table Mountain, Signal Hill, and the Bo-Kaap.
  • The Nobel Square features larger-than-life statues of South Africa's Nobel Peace Prize - former President Nelson Mandela, Albert Luthuli, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and former State President FW de Klerk, created by Claudette Schreuders.
  • Pier Head Square features a giant outdoor chess board, a boules court, and smaller chess boards on the outdoor tables.
  • The red Victorian Gothic-style Clock Tower from 1882 was originally the Port Captain's Office, and houses the tidal gauge mechanism which was used to check the tide level for ships entering or leaving the docks. The Chavonnes Battery Museum in the Clock Tower complex showcases the remains of the 18th century coastal fortification built by the Dutch East India Company.
  • The Iziko Maritime Centre explores the history of shipping in Cape Town, and features the earliest existing model of the Table Bay harbor which was completed in 1885 by prisoners and warders of Breakwater Prison.
  • The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa is a newly-opened contemporary art museum housed in the renovated structure of the historic Grain Silo Complex.
  • The Springbok Experience Rugby Museum is dedicated to South Africa rugby and the Springboks.
  • The Cape Town Diamond Museum by Shimansky is dedicated to the history and cultural impact of the sparkling stones. From their formation over 3 billion years ago to their first sighting in India in 2500 BC and discovery in South Africa in 1867 to the present day fascination for these precious stones, the museum traces the history of how diamonds became one of the most coveted items in the world.
  • The Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre has over 450 retail outlets of local and international brands of items ranging from everyday household items to boutique products, jewelry, and African souvenirs.
  • The Oranjezicht City Farm (OZCF) on Granger Bay hosts the weekly Market Day on Saturdays, with stalls of locally-grown fresh, organic produce and artisan products.
  • The Victoria and Albert Waterfront has plenty of things to do for kids, including the Two Oceans Aquarium, Hamleys Express train ride from the Cape Wheel to the Watershed, Scratch Patch Mineral World, and Jolly Roger Pirate Boat.
  • The Amphitheatre hosts concerts and live entertainment.
  • There are various cruises that go around the harbor and to Robben Island. Helicopter flights offer a birds' eye view over the Peninsula and Robben Island.
