Built by Belgian industrialist and amateur Egyptologist Baron-General Edouard Louis Joseph Empain, the Baron Empain Palace in the Heliopolis suburb of Cairo stands out for its distinctive Indian temple architectural style. Designed by French architect Alexandre Marcel and built in 1907-'11, the concrete mansion has a wide stairway leading to the monumental entrance, and a colonnaded façade with galleries and balustrade balconies. The building is topped by a soaring gopura at one end, features ornamental sculptures and decorative friezes. It has fallen into disrepair over the years, and several of the original frescoes have been ruined.
