Khan el-Khalili, Cairo

One of the oldest open air markets in the Middle East, the Khan el-Khalili traces its origins back to the 14th century.

One of the oldest open air markets in the Middle East, the Khan el-Khalili traces its origins back to the 14th century. The charming medieval souk was set up on the site of the Fatimid tombs in the heart of Cairo's commercial zone. It was then occupied by Turkish merchants, but today it is home to local Eygptian outlets selling a variety of items, from everyday spices and clothing to perfumes, precious stones, jewelry, crafts and souvenirs. Scout the stalls for great deals, and drop by at one of the cafes for a local beverage or shisha (water-pipe).
