La Lonja de la Seda, Valencia

The Lonja de la Seda or Silk Exchange is a late Valencian Gothic style building built in 1482-1533 as a trading centre.

The Lonja de la Seda or Silk Exchange is a late Valencian Gothic style building built in 1482-1533 as a trading centre. Located in the heart of the city in front of the Central Market, this mercantile hotspot is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for exemplifying a late Gothic secular building and illustrating the power and wealth of a Mediterranean mercantile city.

The façade is topped with a crenellated roof, and features interesting sculptural details and 28 Gothic gargoyles. The upper panel has a block of 8 windows, below which are Valencia's coat of arms. Above the windows are medallions representing kings. The entrance porch is called 'el portal de los pecados' (portal of the sins) as it has figures representing original sins of man.

The Lonja has 3 parts, along with the Patio de los Naranjos (Orange Garden) in the courtyard which is laid out with orange and cypress trees. The Salón Columnario or Sala de Contratacion (Contract Hall) is the main hall, a huge 17.4 metre high domed hall with 8 helical columns and 16 pilasters where merchants worked out contracts. The Taula de Canvis, a financial institution created in 1407, was located in this room. The Pavilion of the Consulate was the seat of the Tribunal del Mar, Spain's first marine merchant tribunal. Torreon La Lonja is the central tower in which silk thieves and insolvent merchants were detained. It has a small chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception.
