Dating back to the 2nd century, the Porta Nigra is one of 4 surviving Roman gates in Trier, built as the northern entrance to the city. The 4-storey gate in grey sandstone is 118 feet long and 90 feet high, making it the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. The ruins of Roman columns that lined the street leading to the gate are still visible. The gate is open to visitors. In summer, tours led by guides portraying centurions are available.
