The Basilica of Constantine or Aula Palatina is a 4th century Roman basilica built by Emperor Constantine as a throne room. The 67m x 27.5m x 33m hall is the largest extant single-room structure from antiquity, built at an impressive scale to signify the power of the emperor. It has been variously used – as a fortress in the Middle Ages because of its sturdy construction, as the Archbishop's residence in the 12th century, as part of the Electoral Palace in the 17th-18th century, and army barracks during the Napoleonic and Prussian era.
Today it is used as the Protestant Church of the Redeemer, and is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady in Trier. The Roter Turm to the north of the basilica, which was the archive building of the Archbishop's administration, functions as the bell tower.
