Barrenjoey Lighthouse, Sydney

Sydney’s northernmost point, the Barrenjoey Head on Palm Beach Peninsula, is marked by the Barrenjoey Lighthouse.

Sydney’s northernmost point, the Barrenjoey Head on Palm Beach Peninsula, is marked by the Barrenjoey Lighthouse. Located at a height of 113 metres above sea level, the 20 metre tall heritage lighthouse was built in 1881 from Hawkesbury sandstone quarried on the site. Get awed by the sweeping views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and the Central Coast from the headland.

Vehicles are not allowed in the area, so walking up the pleasant Barrenjoey tracks from the northern end of Governor Phillip Park car park is the only option. There are 2 trails – the shorter but steeper and more challenging 400 metre Smugglers Track which overlooks Palm Beach and Pittwater, and the easy 1 kilometre long Access Trail, which passes by the grave of the lighthouse’s first keeper – George Mulhall. Climb the stairway to the top of the lighthouse for gorgeous views over the Pacific Ocean to the east, Hawkesbury River to the north, and the Pittwater and Broken Bay to the west. The headland also has the head keeper's cottage and 2 assistant keeper's cottages.
