The Statue of Tsar Alexander II occupies centrestage on the square in from the National Assembly of Bulgaria. Built in 1901-'03 to commemorate the country's liberation, and honor Russian Emperor Alexander II who liberated Bulgaria from the Ottomans in the Turkish-Russo War of 1877-'78, the Neo-Renaissance equestrian statue was designed by Arnoldo Zocchi. The 12 metre high bronze statue stands on a polished black granite base atop a pedestal surrounded with bronze reliefs. The front has a sculpture of Greek goddess of victory Nike leading Russian and Bulgarian soldiers, while around the pedestal are luminaries such as General Mikhail Skobelev, General Joseph Gurko, Count Nikolay Ignatiev, and Grand Duke Nicholas Nicolaevich. Other bas-reliefs feature scenes from the Battle of Stara Zagora, the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano and the opening ceremony of the Constituent National Assembly in Veliko Tarnovo. The popular landmark is visited by millions of tourists all year round.
