Saint Sofia Church, Sofia

The Saint Sofia Church is one of the oldest churches in Bulgaria, built in the 6th century.

The Saint Sofia Church is one of the oldest churches in Bulgaria, built in the 6th century. In fact, the city got its present name from the church, as it was known as Sredets earlier. The Byzantine style building exemplifies Early Christian architecture in Southeastern Europe, and is laid out as a cruciform basilica with 3 naves and a 3-aisled apse. It was converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule, but reverted to a church in the 20th century. The church has icons of historical saints such as St. George and St. Vladimir, and the floor still retains some of the complex Early Christian mosaics. It is surrounded by an ancient cemetery with thousands of tombs and catacombs as the site was a Roman era necropolis. You can see the grave of the 'Patriarch of Bulgarian Literature' Ivan Vazov here, as well as a Monument to the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame.
