Sarajevo War Tunnel, Sarajevo

The Sarajevo Tunnel, also known as Tunel spasa and Tunnel of Hope, was constructed by the Bosnian Army in March - June 1993 during the Siege of Sarajevo to link the besieged city with Bosnian-controlled territory on the other side of the Sarajevo Airport which was controlled by the United Nations.

The 840 metre long tunnel linked the Sarajevo neighborhoods of Dobrinja within the sieged area and Butmir which lay outside the Serbian-occupied territory. It was the main passage for food, medicines, electric supplies, humanitarian aid, and arms and ammunition to come into the city, and allowing people to get out.

Today, a 20 metre restored section of the tunnel is preserved as a museum, which also includes the house at the north end that hid the tunnel entrance. You can view an archive video and see the minefield garden. Also on display are war photographs, military equipment, flags, uniforms, and other memorabilia.
