Once known as 'White Gold', salt has been an integral part of Salzburg's history and its mining was one of the reasons for the region's prosperity. The prehistoric deposits at Dürrnberg near Hallein have been mined since the Celtic times, making the Salzbergwerk Dürrnberg (Hallein Salt Mines) the oldest mine in the world that is open to visitors. Explore its network of 65 kilometres of tunnels dug out by miners over centuries, and learn how salt was extracted and transported to other regions. There are 70 minute long guided Salzwelten tours which cover 1 kilometre, including a 400 metre electric train ride followed by 42 metre wooden slides to the lower level of the mine. There is also a boat trip across an underground salt lake.

The Berchtesgaden salt mine is a further 10 kilometres to the south-west, and offers a similar experience.
