The Untersberg is an enormous limestone massif of the Berchtesgaden Alps that lies 16 kilometres to the southwest of Salzburg, rising as high as 1973 metres at the Berchtesgaden Hochthron. It straddles the Austria-Germany border. The Untersbergbahn cable car takes travelers from the lower valley station in Grödig/St. Leonhard at an elevation of 456 metres all the way up to the Geiereck mountain station at 1776 metres in 8.5 minutes. From the top, you can get incredible panoramic views over Salzburg and Berchtesgadener as well as the Salzkammergut lakes on a clear day.

The Untersberg has several cave systems, including the Riesending-Schachthöhle which is the longest cave in Germany with a length of 19.5 kilometres.

It has several hiking routes, and is also popular for climbing, paragliding and mountaineering. In the winter, there is an 8.5 kilometre stretch of half-alpine ski run which leads to Fürstenbrunn. Snowboarding and snowshoeing are other winter activities here.
