Sprawling over 1300 hectares in Cassano delle Murge, the Mercadante forest is part of the Alta Murgia Park. Planted in 1928 as part of a reforestation programme to prevent flooding in the Bari countryside, it is teeming with Mediterranean pine and oak, attracting fauna such as peacocks, sparrows, hawks, robins, geckos, vipers, newts, green toads, and rabbits. It is a popular picnic spot.
