Castel del Monte, Bari

The magnificent Castle del Monte stands at a height of 540 metres on an imposing hill in Andria, 55 kilometres to the west of Bari.

The magnificent Castle del Monte stands at a height of 540 metres on an imposing hill in Andria, 55 kilometres to the west of Bari. The 26 metre tall castle was built in 1240 by Roman Emperor Frederick II Hohenstaufen, and was variously used as a prison and then plague refuge, before it fell into disrepair over the ages. The structure was vandalized and all its marble and mosaic was re-used in nearby constructions, leaving behind limestone and quartz facades.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for harmoniously blending cultural elements from northern Europe (Cistercian Gothic), the Islamic world and classical antiquity, making it 'a unique masterpiece of medieval military architecture'. The Castel has a monumental main entrance in coral-colored marble, and no moat or drawbridges, making it a deviation from standard fort designs of the time. It is laid out in a precise octagonal plan with 2-storeyed octagonal towers with 8 rooms on each floor at each corner around a courtyard. The bare interiors have high cross-vaulted ceilings, and spiral anti-clockwise stairways leading up in 3 of the towers. The walls connecting the towers have a window on each floor. There is a hydraulic installation used by Frederick II that reflects Arabic influence. Some of the architectural elements of the Castle can be seen at the Provincial Gallery of Bari.

To reach the Castel del Monte from Bari, you can take the Ferrovie Nord Barese train, or drive down the SP231 and SP234.
