Appian Way, Rome

'All roads lead to Rome' may be more than an exaggeration today, but the once-important Appian Way certainly does take you to the city of seven hills.

'All roads lead to Rome' may be more than an exaggeration today, but the once-important Appian Way certainly does take you to the city of seven hills. This 5th century BC highway was the Roman Empire's 'Queen of Long Roads', connecting the capital to the port at Brindisi, from where ships sailed to Egypt and Greece. 330 miles long in its heyday, the 10-mile stretch of road around Rome is still in explorable condition. Walk along the Apiian Way to relive history and discover monuments from ancient Rome. Highlights include ●Porta San Sebastiano, the largest Aurelian Walls gate, ●Tombs - of Caecilia Metella (wife of Marcus Licinius Crassus, Julius Caesar's general), Romulus, Seneca, Priscilla (wife of Titus Flavius, freedman of Domitian), ●Circus Maxentius, ●Church of Domine Quo Vadis, ●Baths of Capo di Bove, ●Catacombs of Callixtus and Catacombs of St Sebastian.
