Schöner Brunnen, Nuremberg

Built in the 14th century by stonemason Heinrich Beheim, the 19 metre high Schoner Brunnen is a Gothic limestone fountain in Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt.

Built in the 14th century by stonemason Heinrich Beheim, the 19 metre high Schoner Brunnen is a Gothic limestone fountain in Nuremberg's Hauptmarkt. It has 4 rows of 40 colorful figures representing the world view of the Holy Roman Empire – Philosophy and the 7 liberal arts form the base, the 4 Evangelists and the 4 Church Fathers above it, then the 7 Prince-electors and the 9 Worthies, and on top, Moses and 7 prophets. The gargoyles symbolize the 7 vices. The brass rings seamlessly forged into the iron bars are believed to bring good luck to those who rotate them.
