Spread over several buildings in Nuremberg, the Germanisches Nationalmuseum has over 1.3 million objects related to German art and culture, dating from prehistoric times to the present day. The main building is the 14th century Carthusian monastery, whose church, living quarters and cloisters provided enough space for the original collection in the 19th century. Since then, the museum has expanded to include Neo-Gothic buildings at the Frauentormauer and buildings by architect Sep Ruf at the Kornmarkt. Over 25,000 objects are displayed chronologically at a time.

On the ground floor, the church and cloisters display 14th – 15th century art from Germany and Austria. Along the small cloister courtyard are rooms displaying finds from prehistory and protohistory, dating from 200,000 BC to 800 AD. The adjacent Middle Ages collection displays paintings, sculptures, textiles, treasury objects, ornamented tiles and stained glass from the 8th to the 15th century. The Kornmarkt buildings have the library, archives, coin cabinet, and prints and drawings. Building D has a collection of over 3000 musical instruments from the 16th to 20th century. The next level has the 'Renaissance Baroque Enlightenment' collection of art of the Early Modern Period from the 16th to 18th century, clothing from the 18th to 20th century, historical scientific instruments, apothecary equipment and medical tools. Level 2 has folk art from the 17th to the 19th century, as well as renowned works from the 20th century.
