The Selimiye Mosque was constructed in the 13th century as the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Sophia, but converted into a mosque by the Ottoman invaders in 1570. The rich sculptural decorations, stained glass, marble screens and frescoes that originally adorned the interiors were obliterated when the flat-roofed Gothic church was converted. A pair of 50 metre high minarets, a mihrab, and a courtyard fountain were added. The architecture is still noteworthy, with massive flying buttresses and large windows dominating the façade.
