The Château de Flaugergues is an elegant 18th century mansion in Montpellier noted for its sophisticated décor and elaborate gardens. One of the several follies constructed by the wealthy in the suburbs, the Chateau by Etienne de Flaugergues, an advisor to the Court of Auditors, exudes style and class.
The central 3 storey Italian style castle with a Roman terracotta-tiled roof overlooks the surrounding vineyards and French gardens with 10,000 manicured boxwood shrubs. A 3 hectare English garden further extends to the south-east, while a 400 metre long olive tree-lined path leads to a gazebo. The park and gardens of Flaugergues are also known as Jardin Remarquable. The terrace in front of the chateau has the statues of La Paix and L'Abondance next to the steps.
The grand interiors are decorated with period Louis XV - Louis XVI furniture, delicate porcelain, faience, and exquisite Flemish tapestries depicting scenes from the life of Moses. The centerpiece is a monumental stairway with hanging key vaults and forged iron banisters that leads to all floors. The library houses over 2000 preserved works, engravings, and a series of ancient scientific instruments.
Tours of the complex end with a tasting of the wines of the Languedoc appellation which are produced here.
