The Esplanade d’Europe in the Antigone district of Montpellier is an expansive semicircular plaza on the banks of the Lez River.

The Esplanade d’Europe in the Antigone district of Montpellier is an expansive semicircular plaza on the banks of the Lez River. Designed by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, the entire neighborhood has Greek-inspired architecture. The Esplanade is surrounded by an arc-shaped neo-classical building with residential units, shops and restaurants. At the centre is a replica of the ancient Graeco-Roman sculpture of 'Winged Victory of Samothrace' in marble, the original of which can be seen in the Louvre in Paris. The stretch between Rue de Rhodes and Avenue du Pirée has several water-front restaurants with great views of the river and fountains. The plaza hosts music festivals and concerts in summer.
