The Basilica of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Lourdes is a 19th century Roman Catholic church, better known as the Upper Church as it is located on top of the rock above the Massabielle Grotto. An important pilgrimage site in the Hautes-Pyrenees, it sits above the crypt and the Rosary Basilica.
The Neo-Gothic edifice by Hippolyte Durand has a 70 metre high central spire, and two smaller spires flanking it. The lawns in front of the building have the world's longest rosary, which is 82.9 metres long. The facade has an image of Pope Pius X, while the mosaic above the entrance to the crypt depicts Pope Pius IX. The nave is divided into 9 equidimensional bays, with stained glass windows illustrating the story of the Virgin Mary up until the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception by Pope Pius IX and the Apparitions of Lourdes, as envisioned by Sainte-Bernadette. The walls are adorned with ex voto plaques, and banners from official National Pilgrimages of the past.
