Basantapur Durbar Square

  Neighbourhoods and Streets

The Kathmandu Durbar Square, locally known as Basantapur Durbar Square, is a historic public space in front of the old royal palace in the Hanuman Dhoka complex. Once the social and religious center of the city, it is the setting of coronation ceremonies of the king. It has stunning Hindu temples and Buddhist pagodas, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

It is divided into an outer complex with important temples such as Taleju Temple, Jagannath Temple, Kal Bhairav statue, Kasthamandap, Shiv-Parvati Temple, and Kumari Bahal, and an inner complex with the old palace, courtyards, Basantapur Durbar, Hanuman Dhoka and other structures.

Partially destroyed in the 2015 earthquakes, restoration efforts are currently underway.
